WHAT IS AN OTOPLASTY?

The term “Otoplasty” refers to a surgical procedure which is performed to correct an abnormality of the external ear (pinna). The abnormality could be congenital from birth. Alternatively, the deformity may arise from abnormal development, disease or trauma.

WHAT ARE “BAT EARS”?

“Bat ears” is the term used to describe ears which project too prominently from the head. It is the most common external ear deformity and is easily corrected with a surgical procedure.

Prominent ears can be embarrassing to both children and adults alike.

However, they can be easily corrected with carefully placed incisions to prevent visible scarring.

IF MY CHILD HAS BAT EARS, WHEN SHOULD HE/SHE HAVE THE SURGERY?

Most of my child patients with Bat Ears undergo the surgery when they are about six years old. This is before they enter primary school, thus preventing teasing from other children.

WILL BAT EAR CORRECTION LEAVE VISIBLE SCARRING?

The scar is hidden in the fold behind the ear and is not visible normally.

HOW LONG DOES THE SURGERY TAKE?

This plastic and reconstructive surgery usually takes about 90 minutes. It can be performed either under general anaesthesia or under local anaesthesia with light sedation.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME?

Most of our patients return to work within a week or to school within two weeks.
